MCR Technical Operator

The Comux network, serviced from Comux Network Operations Centre in Birmingham provides transmission facilities for national and regional programming throughout the UK on the Freeview and Virgin Media platforms. The 24×7 Network Operations Centre acts as a central hub for all the contribution and distribution of services, incorporating live and scheduled programming.

The technical area uses the latest technology encompassing IP Multicast, SDI/ASI, Storage, Automation, Playout, Encoding, DVB multiplexing, and monitoring facilities.

 

J O B  D E S C R I P T I O N

 

POSITION:   MCR TECHNICAL OPERATOR                                   FULL TIME

The job is based in Birmingham, West Midlands and is a shift-based role including weekends and night shifts.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the smooth running of the Comux Network Operations Centre.
  • Communicate directly with clients, vendors and 3rd party suppliers in a professional manner.
  • Monitor and provide support for Service Contribution, Playout, Encoding, Multiplex and Transmission software and hardware facilities.
  • Perform live routing switches for redundancy and planned changes as required
  • Provide first and second line fault diagnosis and resolution as necessary, and escalate to appropriate levels and vendors for all technical facilities. Troubleshooting of technical issues in conjunction with engineering team and/or 3rd party vendors/clients.
  • Log issues, incidents and activities, and track these in accordance with agreed operational procedures.
  • Check transmission schedules, EPG delivery and processing.

 

Skills/Experience

  • Operational aptitude, including a general understanding of IT systems and networking.
  • Experience or an interest in broadcast systems from a technical, rather than creative perspective. Knowledge of SDI/ASI and broadcast technologies. .
  • Ability to prioritise workload, work under pressure, and able to work well in a team and on their own.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in Broadcast, Master Control Room (MCR) or Playout operations desirable but not essential as full training will be given to the right candidate.

Projects & Support Engineer

REPORT TO:  Chief Technical Officer  

The Network Operations Centre houses the hub of all the contribution services which are delivered from the regional areas by the respective local TV licensees. The technical areas include two CAR rooms and an MCR, and uses the latest technology encompassing playout, DVB encoding, multiplexing, and are built around an IP infrastructure. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide dedicated projects and maintenance support for the Comux technical areas 
  • Design, install, modify and configure systems and sub-systems in the technical areas 
  • Diagnose hardware and software system faults and provide resolution. 
  • Assist MCR Operational staff with fault diagnosis where required.  
  • Prepare and update support, projects and systems documentation, including fault logs. 
  • Provide Planned Maintenance activities to assist the smooth running of the technical facilities 
  • Provide support for Service Contribution, Encoding, Multiplex and Transmission software and hardware facilities 
  • Provide supervision of additional contract projects staff where required for larger projects 
  • Occasional operational monitoring and support to MCR staff where required, as well as responding to occasional out of hours support calls. 
  • General support to the CTO as required. 
  • Occasional evening or weekend working may be required to meet particular commitments. 

Skills/Experience 

  • Experience in projects and technical support roles in broadcast facilities 
  • Experience with broadcast and IT systems in a projects and / or support role. 
  • Understanding and experience of Operating Systems and IP networking to enable basic configuration and fault finding of systems, including Linux, CentOS, Windows Server, Active Directory, SNMP. 
  • Design and Installation of broadcast and digital media systems. 
  • Knowledge of SDI and ASI, Encoding and Multiplexing systems, including configuration and diagnosis. 
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and meet client deadlines 
  • Strong communication and customer service skills. 
  • Able to work well within a team and on their own. 
  • Qualification in IP Networking technology and related network experience 
  • Experience of Autocad for the updating and creation of system drawings.
